This two inch 1.5 lb. iron "canister shot" was fired on Union forces from a Confederate cannon between 8:30 am and 12:00 pm on June 27, 1864. The battle was one of the turning points of the Civil War, especially for Union General Sherman's "March to the Sea" and his capturing of Atlanta on September 2nd, 1864... a scene forever etched in our collective consciousness by its immortalization in Gone with the Wind.
